usa - Legal regulations for plastics in contact with food

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for public health in the USA. Within the framework of annual publications, the so-called Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), recommendations and specifications for food contact of various materials are issued under Title 21 (CFR, Title 21).

In addition, Food Contact Notifications (FCN) provide information on the safe use of materials in contact with food.

However, the FDA does not test the different plastics. Neither components nor semi-finished products are tested. Rather, the materials used in the applications must comply with the recommendations and requirements of the FDA. In this respect, no certificates or test certificates can be issued, but only notifications confirming the compliance of the delivered plastics with the corresponding CFR titles or the FCN.
