Machining technology

Complex and highly stressed components made of plastic, such as those used in machines for food and packaging technology or conveyor technology, are often manufactured using machining technology.

The tolerance requirements, the mechanical loads and the demanded wall thicknesses for these components as well as the mostly small quantities make these processes reasonable.

The semi-finished plastics required for machining usually have better mechanical properties than the granulates used in injection moulding. Injection-mouldable plastics require a lower viscosity due to the process and generally have a lower degree of crystallisation. Direct comparisons have shown that, for example, slide bearings turned from polyamide 6.6 have a 30 to 40 % longer service life than the comparable injection-moulded version.

Advantages of machining as opposed to injection moulding

  • single pieces and small series can be produced without any problems!
  • as a rule, no tool costs are incurred!
  • depending on the material, the narrowest tolerances (up to ± 0.01 mm) can be guaranteed!
  • large wall thicknesses can be ensured without any problems!
  • first components can be delivered in the shortest possible time (< 4 weeks)!
